In some families there is a clear favorite. At this point my brother Jesse is that person in our family. Just to be little jerks John and I gave him the nickname Jeses, read like “Jesus” but a little earthier. John and I aren’t bitter about Jesse being the favorite, he’s earned it.
Jesse is one of the funniest people on the planet. I’ve spent many years trying to follow in his footsteps. Jesse went to community college, CU and then Metro and I did the exact same. Jesse became a fanatic about politics and I did the exact same. Jesse’s friends were my friends and neither Jesse nor his friends had any say in the matter. It’s gotten to the point where it’s ok that I forced myself into his life so much, but it was a little pathetic for a few years. He would never say that though. He is incredibly supportive. And honest. So, very honest.
“Your haircut makes you look like a bug”
Fair. That’s fair.
It’s great knowing that I can come to him for honest input. He is always the voice of reason when I need one. Jesse was my only ally during the Karl days Mom’s third husband; not a bad guy but terrible jokes and one after another “How do you catch a unique rabbit? Unique up on it. How do you catch a tame rabbit? Tame way, unique up on it.” We still don’t understand what a unique rabbit is.
There’s no shaking Jesse. He can overcome anything. He started a business from nothing and it’s doing really well, this isn’t much of a surprise because he’s a balance of good people skills, hard work and intelligence. He was driven to be financially independent from his family since a very young age and he achieved it. He married Leslie and she’s effin’ perfect too. There’s a rumor in our family (started and upheld only by John and me) that Mom tried to abort Jesse and couldn’t do it. We call the scar on the back of his head the attempted abortion. He had a smart mouth at a young age. I’d love to see a little 9 year old debating politics like Jesse did. He would’ve gotten HIT if he weren’t so right.
As the youngest child, I like to take major events for other people and reflect on how they benefit me. Jesse got married this year and it was a huge benefit to me. I gained a sister in law that is one of my best friends, family members pressure Jesse about grandkids and have taken pressure off of me and I got to attend a raging party. Today is Jesse’s birthday and I can’t imagine where I would be without him. I shudder to think what path that I would have taken had I not had Jesse to look up to and were I not driven by a constant desire to make Jesse proud of me. Today is a very important day to me, but unfortunately for Jeses, all he gets for his birthday is a blog post and a deadbeat roommate as chez Jesse and Leslie is my first stop on this adventure.
